From Memory to Memoir: The Foundation of Writing and Shaping Your Life Story
Everyone has stories. Memoir is the art of transforming those experiences into meaningful narratives that help us better understand ourselves, our lives, and the world around us.
In this three-week introductory course, participants will explore the foundations of memoir writing, including what distinguishes memoir from autobiography, personal essay, and fiction. Through discussion, examples, writing exercises, and guided reflection, students will learn the essential elements of memoir craft, including scene development, character, voice, structure, and the role of reflection in shaping lived experience into compelling story.
Whether you dream of writing a book, preserving family stories, or simply exploring your life through writing, this course will provide a strong foundation for understanding memoir and beginning to shape your own experiences into meaningful narratives.
Participants will receive handouts, suggested readings, and optional between-session writing exercises.

Ally Berthiaume is an award-winning author, memoir coach, developmental editor, workshop facilitator, and founder of The Write Place, Right Time. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing (Nonfiction) and helps people tell the stories only they can tell—stories rooted in lived experience, hard-earned wisdom, and the moments that shape who we become.
The author of two award-winning books, Dear Universe, I Get It Now and Do Not Write a Book...Until You Read This One, Ally believes writing is about far more than putting words on a page. Through coaching, editing, workshops, and retreats, she helps people reconnect with their inner voice, make meaning from their experiences, and shape those experiences into stories that matter.
Known for her warm, encouraging, and practical teaching style, Ally combines story craft, curiosity, and reflection to help writers uncover the deeper truths within their lives and bring them to the page with confidence. She lives in Essex Junction, Vermont with her husband and son.
