Darning: An Intro to Fixing Knitted Clothing

This class is for anyone who wants to learn the basics to mend their own knitted items like socks, gloves, hats, sweaters, and more.
You will learn:

how to repair a hole or snag in a knit item by darning, a simple woven type of mending.
how to inspect and assess a knit (or woven) item that needs repair.
how to select a needle, select yarn/thread, and tie a knot.
blanket stitch, the basis for other creative knit repairs and Scotch darning.
how to start, weave and finish a basic darn square with one or two colors using a darning mushroom or embroidery hoop.

Practice or start darning an item that is ready for some attention!

Students can bring an item they would like to learn how to mend by darning.
All other materials included.

No experience required. Ages 13 and older recommended; younger students are welcome with an adult caregiver who is also registered.

Marie is a self-taught lifelong hand stitcher who mended and patched for friends and family. Inspired by the work of artists Celia Pym and Hikaru Noguchi, Marie expanded her skills to include visible darning and other techniques, and now teaching mending basics to others. Hand stitching is slow, which allows space for contemplation and joy in a demanding and noisy world. Marie is also very pleased and honored to be the lead teacher for the Champlain Community Services partnership with Shelburne Craft School.
