While French is spoken in many countries throughout the world, the main focus will be on the cultural aspects of France. During the 90-min sessions, the focus of the course will be on practical communication, cultural understanding and situational vocabulary. While not a requirement, some knowledge of French will be helpful prior to taking this course. Introduction to French Conversation - Part 2MUSIC & LANGUAGESReady to start speaking French? This unique beginner-friendly conversation course focuses on using French right away in everyday situations. This course has been broken into 2 courses. Each course will be 6 sessions, 90 min each session, allowing students to continue as time permits while maximizing each lesson. Part 1 will cover units 1-6 . Part 2 will cover units 7-12. Through practical vocabulary, simple phrases, guided conversation, and engaging activities, you’ll build confidence communicating in French without getting bogged down in grammar and writing. Designed for students with little or no prior French experience, the course will introduce useful language for real-life conversations while gradually expanding your vocabulary and understanding. You’ll learn to greet others, introduce yourself, ask and answer questions, talk about everyday life, and more while developing your listening and speaking skills. This conversation-focused course is designed for students who already have a basic foundation in French and want to refresh, strengthen, and polish their skills through engaging conversation. Rather than focusing heavily on grammar or written exercises, class time will center on speaking, listening, vocabulary, and the natural rhythms of French conversation. Through a variety of topics and activities, you’ll have the opportunity to practice expressing yourself, build confidence, and reconnect with language you may not have used in a while. How to Start Sewing: Foundations of Garment SewingARTS & CRAFTSIf you are interested in learning the basics of clothing construction, and would like to create a wearable garment then this course is for you! In this 8-week course (20 hours!), students will learn essential garment sewing techniques while constructing the a button down over-sized shirt (unisex) using a versatile pattern from Simplicity 9952. This pattern can be designed to your liking as long or short- both in length and sleeve, with or without a collar. Using the Assembil text, How to Start Sewing, as a foundational guide, students will build skills in pattern reading, fabric selection, seam finishes, fitting adjustments, hemming, and excellent garment construction techniques. By the end of the course, each student will complete a beautiful and unique handmade shirt as well as and gain the confidence to sew garments independently and read a pattern. Throughout the course, we will explore: Reading and understanding patterns and pattern markings Selecting appropriate fabrics Accurate cutting and marking Seam construction and finishing Inserting sleeves Button Holes Neckline/collar finishing techniques Hemming and professional pressing Basic fitting adjustments This course is ideal for confident beginners who are comfortable using a sewing machine and are ready to complete their first garment—or refine their foundational skills. We will refer to handouts from the the Assembil book, How to Start Sewing as a companion guide to reinforce core sewing principles and best practices. Materials and supplies: A list of materials and supplies will be emailed to you after registration. Requirement: Comfortable using and operating a sewing machine. All students will have use of a sewing machine in our sewing lab. A brief tutorial will be provided on the first day of class. Age 16+. Optional: Sign-up for Open Sewing Studio after taking this course. Julie will be available to help you with your sewing needs as you continue to practice garment sewing and new patterns. Choose your shirt design from one simple pattern- The over-sized Shirt! The Learn to Sew class with Julienne was excellent! Julienne is so knowledgeable and creative that one couldn’t help but walk away excited to start sewing. Sewing Open Studio with SupervisionARTS & CRAFTSLooking to continue practicing and building your sewing skills? Join us for Sewing Open Studio at CVU, where you can work independently on your sewing projects while having an experienced instructor available for guidance and support. Prerequisite: Completion of Foundations of Garment SewingAge: 16+ Each Open Studio session is 2 hours, with limited space to ensure everyone has room to work comfortably. Participants are responsible for bringing all necessary materials and supplies to each session and taking them home afterward. Sewing instructor Julie Lambre will be available throughout each session to answer questions, help troubleshoot projects, and provide guidance on sewing techniques as needed.
