This is our most popular woodworking class, and it tends to fill up quickly! In this hands-on two-session workshop, you’ll design and build your own hardwood charcuterie board. Choose from a variety of shapes, sizes, and wood combinations to create something that fits your own style and makes a great addition to your kitchen or a unique handmade gift. All wood used in this class is repurposed or reclaimed, sourced from pallets, shipping containers, old furniture, and other rescued wood. A wide selection of hardwoods will be available and may include maple, ash, purpleheart, birch, Brazilian cherry, oak, and others. We’ll have wood prepared in various stages, so you can do as much or as little of the power-tool work as you’re comfortable with. Some pieces will be ready to use, while others may need planing, jointing, cutting, or other preparation. Session 1: You’ll choose your wood and design, prepare the individual pieces, and glue and clamp them together to create your board blank. Depending on your project, tools may include the miter saw, table saw, planer, jointer, and clamps. Session 2: After the glue has cured, you’ll remove the clamps and dried glue, flatten the board as needed, lay out the final shape and optional handle, and cut the profile using the band saw or scroll saw. You’ll then sand the board smooth and apply a food-safe board oil to bring out the natural color and grain of the wood. No previous woodworking experience is required. We’ll demonstrate the tools and techniques used throughout the project and help you safely complete each step. Everyone will leave the workshop with a finished, food-safe hardwood charcuterie board of their own—ready to use, show off, or give as a gift! Although this is a beginner class, we’re also offering an Introduction to Woodworking and Shop Tools workshop for students who want to experience a wider variety of tools. Skip the pumpkin carving this year and build a wooden jack-o’-lantern you can bring out every Halloween! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll build your own wooden jack-o’-lantern from repurposed and rescued wood. We’ll provide a variety of face templates ranging from traditional jack-o’-lanterns to something a little more spooky—or you can create your own. You’ll learn how to measure and lay out your project, cut and shape the individual pieces, transfer your jack-o’-lantern design, drill starter holes, and use a jigsaw to cut out the face. You’ll then assemble your project using wood glue and a brad nailer before sanding and preparing it for finishing. The jigsaw is an inexpensive and versatile tool that many people already have at home, so this is a great beginner project for learning how to cut curves and shapes—skills you can easily use on future woodworking and DIY projects. Your jack-o’-lantern can be left natural or painted, stained, or finished at home. Want it to glow? Bring a small battery-operated LED light or candle and we can incorporate it into your design during the workshop. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll build a wooden wine rack designed to hold and display your favorite bottles. The finished rack is compact enough for a countertop, cabinet, or home bar and makes a great addition to a kitchen or entertaining space. We’ll guide you through the entire build, from laying out and cutting the individual pieces to assembling, sanding, and finishing your wine rack. Along the way, you’ll get hands-on experience with common woodworking tools and techniques, including measuring and layout, cutting, drilling, sanding, and assembly. We’ll also show you some simple tricks for keeping your project square and getting consistent results when making repeated parts. Standard pine will be available, along with a selection of maple, oak, and other hardwoods for anyone who wants to mix different woods into their design. Combining woods is a great way to add contrast and make each wine rack a little different. No previous woodworking experience is required. We’ll demonstrate the tools and techniques as we go and help you safely complete each step. Create a pair of decorative wooden lanterns while learning basic woodworking skills in this fun, hands-on workshop. They’re great for a porch, deck, patio, table, or centerpiece and are designed for use with battery-operated LED candles. We’ll have several designs to choose from using similar materials and construction techniques. You can make a matching pair, two different sizes, or mix up the designs. You can also give yours a seasonal look, including a Christmas or holiday theme. Have another design in mind? Within reason, we can probably build that too—just check with us ahead of time. You’ll cut and fit the individual pieces, assemble them using wood glue and a brad nailer, sand your projects, and add the finishing details that make them your own. Along the way, you’ll get hands-on experience measuring and laying out a project, making accurate cuts with a miter saw, safely using a brad nailer, assembling and squaring a project, and preparing wood for finishing. The candle holders will be built primarily from pine, and all of the wood used in the workshop is repurposed or rescued. All materials, including decorative handles, are included. You’re also welcome to bring your own handles or hardware if you have a particular look in mind. They can be left natural or painted, stained, or finished with polyurethane at home to create the look you want. No previous woodworking experience is required. You’ve probably seen beautiful handcrafted address signs like these on Etsy and at craft shows. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll build your own using reclaimed and rescued wood while learning practical woodworking skills along the way. You’ll choose from a variety of woods and use their natural colors, grain, and character to create your design. Different species and pieces can be combined to create herringbone, chevron, diagonal, geometric, or completely original patterns. We’ll have both finished and unfinished wood available, giving you plenty of options for creating the look you want. Some of the wood will be prepared and pre-cut so you can jump right into your design, but you’re also welcome to cut and shape your own pieces. We’ll show you the tools and techniques as we go, so no previous woodworking experience is required. You’ll get hands-on experience laying out your design, making accurate cuts, arranging and fitting the individual pieces, gluing and fastening them to a backing with a brad nailer, building the surrounding frame, sanding, and positioning your numbers or lettering. Numbers & Lettering: You can bring your own numbers or letters or add them yourself after class. Approximately 4-inch numbers work well and are available in a huge variety of styles. We’ll provide more information before class on where and how to order them. You can leave the wood completely natural or apply a clear protective finish at home that highlights the grain and natural colors. Learn to build a traditional wooden picture frame from scratch in this hands-on woodworking workshop. You’ll start with prepared pine stock and turn it into a finished frame while learning techniques that can be used to make frames of almost any size in the future. We’ll learn how a rabbet is used to hold the glass, photo, and backing and how the table saw can be used to create one. Frame stock will be prepared with the rabbet already cut, but students who would like additional table-saw experience will have the opportunity to learn and practice cutting a rabbet using wider stock under instructor supervision. You’ll use the table saw to rip wider stock to frame width and learn how to create clean, accurate 45-degree miters. We’ll use simple jigs and the project itself to help establish our final cuts, allowing you to practice making small adjustments until the corners fit together cleanly. You’ll cut and dry-fit your frame, glue and clamp the mitered joints, sand and prepare the wood, and install the glass, backing, and hanging hardware. All wood used in the workshop will be pine and will be repurposed or rescued. No previous woodworking experience is required. Along the way, you’ll gain hands-on experience with the table saw, miter saw, clamping, sanding, finishing preparation, and accurate joinery. All materials needed to complete the frame are included. Materials will be available for practice and multiple frames, glass and backing will be provided for one standard 8 × 10 frame. Just in time to add a favorite photo and turn it into a handmade gift.
