Join us for Sewing Open Studio at CVU, where you can work independently on your sewing projects while having an experienced instructor available for guidance and support. Participants are responsible for bringing all necessary materials and supplies to each session and taking them home afterward. This stained-glass course is designed for beginner and intermediate students. During this 5-session class students will learn the fundamentals of the copper foil technique. While learning the nuances of glass cutting, shaping, grinding, copper foiling and soldering, students will create a practice piece. With their newly discovered talent, students will craft a stained-glass masterpiece to cherish or gift. Students will have an option to design their own ‘cartoon’ (pattern) or choose a prepared entry level cartoon. Students are encouraged to bring their ideas or a workable sketch to our first class. Cartoons should be no more than 10-14 individual pieces, and no larger than 8 ½ x 11 (the standard size of a piece of paper). Sign up early as there are limited spots available. Age requirement: 18+. This class is for anyone who wants to learn the mending basics so they can use stitching or patching to repair their own clothing. You will learn: how to inspect and assess a fabric item that needs repair. how to select patch fabric, select thread, and tie a knot. Learn and practice stitches used for fabric mending: running stitch, parachute stitch, cross stitch and blanket stitch. different approaches to patch placement (under, over, quilt). Practice patching a fabric square on your own item. Students can bring an item they would like to learn how to mend by stitching or patching. All other materials included. No experience required. Join veteran beekeeper, Gerald Posner, owner of Swaying Daisies Honeybee Farm, as he shares best practices and procedures for helping honeybee's successfully overwinter and thrive during and after the the harsh climate of Vermont. This honeybee course will have both practical and hands-on learning to give you the full experience. Each attendee will have the opportunity to practice “best in class” activities to successfully overwinter their honeybee colonies. Tourtière, a French Canadian meat pie dish originating from Quebec, is a meal that will keep you and your family and friends warm on a cold winter evening. Generally served around Christmas time, this meat pie is made with various meats, vegetables, and spices. The filing is unique, but the crust is the "piece de resistance" with Adele’s tried and true "Hot Crust" method that yields a flaky pie crust that is delicious and simple to make. This is a perfect dish to make ahead and freeze for additional chilly nights. Adele will demonstrate her secret methods with the class, and then each student will get to sample the results before making their own small pie to take home and freeze or bake at your leisure! In this fun class, we'll reinforce those basic ukulele chords and strums and explore fresh territory. We'll learn how to use strumming patterns to add texture to songs. We'll smooth out chord transitions and work on timing and other ways of bringing more musicality into your playing. Bring your questions and quandaries and we'll take 'em on! Upcycling clothing, especially shirts, has become a popular approach for embellishing, covering flaws, and personalizing clothing inexpensively. During this 3-week class, stitchers will create their own embellished shirt, while learning the following techniques: how to cover holes and stains using needle-weaving how to do cross stitch motifs with Waste Canvas how to create designs by means of blanket stitch applique. Other embroidery techniques suitable for upcycling will be discussed. Students should come to class with: Scissors appropriate for cutting both fabric and paper Embroidery hoop (4-7 inches in diameter) Glasses, magnifiers and/or battery-operated personalized lighting you normally used when stitching (optional) A variety of “thrifted” shirts will be available to choose from in class. Students who desire a specific size, color or style, are encouraged to bring their own shirt to class. When selecting your shirt, please consider the following: Look for a 100% Cotton (or 60% cotton/40% polyester) Oxford style shirt Please wash and dry the shirt before class Avoid tightly woven cotton blends and shirts with wrinkle control and heavy denim jackets since these will be more difficult to stitch. Avoid shirts that are labeled as “stretch” or include Lycra In the spirit of “upcycling”, consider thrifting a shirt, or using something from your closet that may have holes or stains Students should have basic needle skills.
